ORCHESTER DES MARIINSKY-THEATERS & VALERY GERGIEV
The Russian elite orchestra from St. Petersburg, noted for the incredible breadth of its musical spectrum, makes its third appearance under its charismatic maestro Valery Gergiev at the 2017 Dresden Music Festival. With Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 the musicians perform a work which proved a huge success at its world premiere in 1937, despite – or perhaps because – the audience clearly perceived the hidden, not so optimistic messages in the superficially positive finale. Richard Wagner, on the other hand, had quite a different concept of revolutions. With brilliant excerpts – from his »Götterdämmerung«, among others - the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre with its massive opera experience draws an overarching line from the era of Russian Stalinism to the late romantic period.
